Highlights of our trip to London!
We had an extremely successful trip to London, August 22 - 30, 2000.
From arrival to departure it was non-stop adventure as we visited historic
sights, met Girl Guides from around the world, toured fortresses and castles,
worshipped in cathedrals, were scared witless by ghosts and shopped till we
dropped!
A selection of photos and their descriptions can be found
below that are just a few of the highlights
of the trip.
 |
Arrival in Gatwick! We made it without
loss of luggage, passports or girls. This part was a breeze. Our
arrival at Victoria Station in the midst of rush hour was terrifying! We
survived the angry commuters, flights of stairs, escalators and the Underground
to arrive safely at Pax Lodge by mid-morning on Wednesday. |
 |
Setting out for sightseeing!
On Thursday we set out in uniform for a day in Ancient London. We begin at
the Tower of London (construction began in 1066) and a tour given by a Yeoman
Warder (Beefeater.) |
 |
Girl Scout Troop 183 at Tower Bridge!
The girls patiently posed for multiple pictures after visiting the Crown Jewels
and lunch in the shadow of the White Tower. Shopping was a highlight of
our time at the Tower. |
 |
The Steps of St. Paul's Cathedral! After
visiting The Museum of London and learning about the 2000 years of London's
history, we walked through St. Paul's. Outside we took pictures on the
steps made famous by the Bird Lady in Disney's Mary Poppins and where Princess
Diana entered the cathedral for her marriage to Prince Charles. |
 |
Friday Evening Programme at Pax Lodge! We joined Girl Guides and Girl Scouts from around the world for an
evening of games, songs and skits. Our internet pen-pal troop traveled in
for the evening just to see us! |
 |
Sunday Service at Westminster Abbey!
The troop membership represents different faiths, but we all appreciated the reverent
atmosphere, the beautiful sung service and sense of history while in the abbey. We looked
wonderful in our dress uniforms and took the opportunity to take a group photo
just outside the front gates of Westminster Abbey. We returned later in
the week to tour the abbey and see the memorial to the Baden-Powell's and Boy
Scouting / Girl Guiding. |
 |
Theatre Night - Starlight Express! We finished our week with a trip to an evening performance of Starlight
Express. The girls were dressed up for the evening and we had awesome
seats at the front of the dress circle balcony. Races took the skaters
right in front of us! The girls would cheer and give the performers
high-fives during the show! The music was great and the entire night was a
perfect finish for our week in London. |
 |
Our fearless chaperones! Thanks
to our parent support and troop leadership for adding to the success of the
trip. We couldn't have done it without them. |
| There were many more highlights than space available to share
them with you! We will never forget playing "Marco Polo" in the
maze at Hampton Court or the terrifying appearance of a ghostly apparition
during our "Ghosts of the Old City" walking tour. We will always
remember sitting in the oldest classroom in continuous use (500+ years) at Eton
College and the Changing of the Guard at Horse Guards Parade. |
| We hope you have enjoyed our photo's. If you have any
questions about our trip or would like information on how Girl Scout Troop 183 planned
their trip to
London, please contact the troop leader at gstroop183@hotmail.com |
