Girl Scout Troop 183 Trip to the Girl Scout World Center, London, England
August 22-30, 2000

In 1997, two Junior troops plus additional girls joined together to form Girl Scout Troop 183.  At that time, they began long range planning for an international trip.  Intent to travel forms were submitted and fundraising began. In 1999, the troop researched and made the decision to travel to London, England to visit the Girl Scout World Center, Pax Lodge.

Dates were chosen to be during school summer holidays, outside of regular sports seasons and when the weather was good in England.  We had to work with Pax Lodge to accommodate 20 visitors.

Planning and Preparation

Once a month travel meetings began in August of 1999.  At that time, information was provided about Readiness, Requirements and Preparation to all troop members so that they could make an informed decision about travel to England. Intent to Travel Forms were required of all participating troop members and adults. The purpose of the travel meetings was to plan the itinerary, research where will be visiting, study English history and be prepared for all aspects of the trip.

Based on the requirements of the girls, an itinerary was designed and a budget formed.  See our Travel Budget for more information. Every girl knew what her fundraising goal was and participated in a variety of troop fundraising activities.

Required equipment and clothing was reviewed in October 1999, to allow time for holiday gift lists to be written!  See our Equipment List for details.

Everyone traveling required a passport and photos were taken in November 1999. Each girl submitted for a passport with her parent. Photocopies of individual passports were required and carried in case of emergency.

All troop members participated in American Red Cross CPR and American Red Cross Basic First Aid Training prior to travel.

An English Girl Guide troop was located through the internet and the girls communicated by snail mail and e-mail letters to get acquainted. We spent an evening with our sisters in scouting at Pax Lodge, enjoying the activities together when we were in London.

The troop was interviewed about our travel plans and the newspaper article is included for your reading pleasure.
